87% of brands say social is vital for competitiveness

Eighty-seven percent of global businesses say it’s important to use social media to remain competitive, and 80% report that social has grown in importance for their customers and their company since last year, according to Hootsuite. Some 54% of respondents said social transcends marketing, 90% employ social to increase brand awareness, and 77% use the channel to manage their brand’s reputation.
Just 11% using blockchain in digital media ad buys

Only 11% of agency executives and advertisers have bought ads using blockchain technology, according to Advertiser Perceptions. Some 45% of respondents said they had no plans to use blockchain to purchase digital media in the future, 13% said they intended to use it within the next year, and 28% said they’d employ blockchain in ad buys within two years.
Twitter tops timelines with livestreams

Twitter has placed livestreams from followed accounts atop users’ timelines. The company is also making in-stream video ads more prominent, writes Amy Gesenhues.
Data spend by US marketers to hit $15B next year

US marketers will invest $12.3 billion in data this year, with global spend set to reach $20.6 billion, according to OnAudience.com. The study estimates that US spend will hit $15 billion in 2019, and UK marketers will invest the second-highest amount in data next year at $2.4 billion.

Connected TV accounts for 27% of video impressions

Connected TV ad impressions have spiked 106% since 2016, and connected TV now takes a 27% share of video volume, Innovid reports. The company also reports that the number of advertisers using connected TV rose 30% from 2016 to last year.

Digital marketers should optimize for voice search with longer keywords and a focus on localized search engine optimization, writes Ryan Ayers. Develop consumer trust with a consistent brand voice, ensure your site is mobile-friendly and adopt text as a key communications tool, and put in place cross-departmental marketing teams to ensure a coherent strategy that allocates spend where it will most drive brand revenue, he advises.
